History and Origin: Promoted as the World’s most fashionable tea by the Jackson’s of Piccadilly, Earl Grey is named after Charles, the 2nd Earl Grey and British Prime Minister.
The story goes that he tried to replicate the flavours of tea he tried in China. Hence, a tea was created as per his palate with Bergamot, a Mediterranean citrus fruit. The recipe being simple black tea and a few drops of bergamot squeezed in.
Fun Fact: According to the Grey family, bergamot was used as a flavouring to set off the lime flavour in the well water on Earl Grey’s estate.
